Five tips to make luxury-smelling candles as a present to reduce your Christmas spending

LIGHT up someone’s life with a present to remember.

DIY gifts are a great way to reduce your Christmas spending, so why not try making some luxury sweet-smelling candles . . .

Shutterstock

Five tips to make luxury-smelling candles as a present to reduce your Christmas spending[/caption]

CREATIVE KIT: You are going to need wax, wicks, candle holders and more, so true beginners might appreciate starting smaller. At The Range, get the Create Your Own Candle Kit for £5.99. It contains everything you need to make two candles and is a great way to get into into the craft.

BUNDLE BARGAIN: If you are already a seasoned crafter, you can use thesprucecrafts.com guide. which explain what you need to know.

As for the materials, you can head to Hobbycraft. Get nine pre-waxed wick assemblies for soya wax for £3.50, a 1kg pack of soya wax flakes for £12, three round wax tins for £5.50 and vanilla candle fragrance oil, 50ml for £9. That’s £30. But buy them all together as the Get Started In Candle Making bundle for £24.25, saving £5.75.

SCENT SENSE: Keep things festive with the right scent for your candle.

Buy 10ml bottles of individual oil with scents like cinnamon bark at Nikura.com for £2.29. But at Amazon, get 10ml bottles of fragrances including Gingerbread or Christmas spice for £1.95.

GO FOR LUXURY: The White Company Winter candle is a favoured festive gift but, at £20, a pricey one. Instead, the candle-shack.co.uk Cosy Christmas Candle Kit may be the answer. The luxury kit is slightly pricier at £24, but includes two glossy white candle jars, two silver tins with lids, wax, wood wicks and Cosy Christmas fragrance oil. Make four candles, at £6 each.

RECYCLE: Make your present more eco-friendly by reusing wax where you can. Once your fave candle has burned through, fill the jar with hot water and leave. The residue will float to the top, leaving a disc of wax when it cools, which you can melt and add to wax flakes.

JAZZY JAR: Save even more by recycling jars to use as candle holders. Decorate with paint or make it chic with a string bow – just ensure it’s not near the flame.

  • All prices correct at time of going to press. Deals/offers subject to availability.

Home Bargains shoppers rush to buy Christmas day essential for just £4 – but you’ll have to be quick

HOME Bargains shoppers have been raving over this Christmas day essential that costs just under £4.

Christmas fans have been itching to get their hands on the discount store’s festive sleigh and it’s perfect to hold your kids’ presents.

Home Bargains

Shoppers are itching to get their hands on this Christmas sleigh[/caption]

A savvy shopper posted the bargain find to the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK.

She wrote: “Loving these sleigh hampers from home bargains £3.99 make great Christmas gifts.”

The woman showed her own sleighs filled with crisps and chocolate hampers, all ready for the big day.

The post was met with thousands and thousands of comments from like-minded parents with their eyes on the sleigh.

So much so, it has been going in and out of stock on the Home Bargains website since it was posted.

That means that if you spot it you’ll have to be quick if you want one.

One Facebook user commented “going to have to get this” with a heart-eyes emoji.

Another said: “I’m gonna see if I can find them next week an do all the kids one.”

One woman said: “What a great idea!!”

The festive sleigh can be bought both online and in store but at the time of writing is out of stock.

But, it does keep going in and out of stock so make sure you keep checking if you’re looking to order.

Do factor in delivery charges though when placing an order online.

Home Bargains describes the cardboard sleigh as “an alternative stocking” ready to be filled with gifts.

It’s relatively small and would likely only fit enough presents for one person at 28 x 52 x 20cm.

The sleigh includes: 2x Side Support, 1x Base, 1x Front Support, 1x Back Support.

It is red and white and has “Christmas delivery” on the side.

If you’re out of luck and can’t seem to grab one of the cardboard sleighs, Home Bargains also sells a metal one and a larger decorated sleigh for £4.99 and £29.99 respectively.

This is the cheapest we could find a cardboard sleigh like this.

We did find a similar one at Hobby Craft for £4 but you have to decorate it yourself as it comes just white.

We also found a red festive one at PartyPieces.co.uk for £9.99.

Do always keep an eye out for better deals we may have missed – there is never a bad time to bag a bargain.

As we get a few days into December prices might go down as well as shops begin to clear their stock.

It always pays to compare prices so you know you’re getting the best deal.

Prices can also vary day to day what deals are on at the time and remember you might pay for delivery you’re ordering online.

You can compare prices on websites like Google shopping.

Meanwhile, if you’re still looking for a bargain have a read of our full list of cheapest advent calendars.

And, we also found this £2 Reese’s bargain in a little known food store.

Get iPhone 12 with 100GB data for £31p/m from Three

THE November sales might be over, but there are still some nice phone deals online right now.

This iPhone 12 plan from Three offers buyers 100GB of data for just £31 per month, and the phone costs £0 upfront.

Three has slashed the upfront cost of Apple’s 2020 smartphone this December

Scroll roughly halfway down the Buymobile iPhone 12 contracts webpage and you’ll find this gem of a contract from Three.

Originally, it came with an upfront cost of £65 but that’s been reduced to zero in what Buymobiles has badged a ‘Winter Wonder’ discount.

Since the release of the all-new iPhone 14 in September, we’ve watched monthly costs for the iPhone 13 tumble – but some of the best deals during Black Friday were on the iPhone 12.

Okay, it’s quite a budget phone – this is Apple tech – but £31 a month is a solid sum on what’s still a fabulous piece of tech.

It’s the first iPhone that came with an OLED display, 5G connectivity and MagSafe charging, so it’s still very much part of the new era of Apple smartphones.

Our Tech Editor Sean Keach tested the smartphone upon its release, and in his iPhone 12 review he describes it as ‘a great all-rounder with amazing features for the price’.

That price was back in 2020 – two years on, it’s all the better.

If you’ve got an eye on a newer phone, take a look at a great iPhone 13 deal our tech deals reporter Tom Tyers covered last week.

You can pick up the iPhone 13 from Vodafone with 200GB data for £30 per month and £160 upfront.

For the next two generations of Apple smartphone, head to our pick of the best iPhone 13 deals and best iPhone 14 deals.

If you’re keener on Apple’s affordable handset, there’s our best iPhone SE deals page.

We’ve got more offers from the network listed at our Three deals hub.

Uber is giving away free takeaways over Christmas – but there’s a catch

UBER is offering free takeaways to fans over the festive period – but not everyone can claim.

The deal will allow certain shoppers to bag Uber rewards over Christmas, worth £30 altogether.

Reuters

Certain customers will be able to grab a free Uber takeaway this Christmas[/caption]

This year, NHS workers will once more get free food from Uber in gratitude for all their hard work.

Workers will be able to claim two £10 Uber rides, plus one £10 meal through Uber Eats.

It’ll be available for all NHS staff in England, Scotland and Wales, plus Health and Social Care staff in Northern Ireland.

Uber customers need to link their Uber account to a valid NHS or HSC email address in order to get the deal.

They’ll then be sent a promo code which they will need to add to their Uber account.

You’ll need to sign up to Uber and the Uber Eats app to get these deals if you haven’t already.

You can do this quite quickly – it’s free and both apps can be downloaded on the App Store and Google Play.

Just remember you’ll need to pay a delivery charge when ordering through Uber Eats.

The Sun has asked Uber whether there’s a limit on how many people can claim the deal, and we’ll update this story when we hear back.

Dr. Alex George, Uber campaign partner, said“Those in the healthcare sector work tirelessly over the festive period to make sure we’re all taken care of.

“I know, from working on the ward myself, that something as simple as a free lunch or ride home can make all the difference after a stressful day.”

Andrew Brem, Uber general manager for the UK and Ireland, added: “Our brilliant NHS has seen us through a pandemic and now thousands of staff will be working through Christmas.

“We want to make sure that travel is one less thing to worry about this Christmas by offering a free ride to and from work.”

Both Uber and Uber Eats offers can be redeemed on December 24 and 25.

Other ways to get free and discounted takeaways

If you’re not an NHS employee, there are still plenty of ways to look out for free or discounted takeaways.

For one, always hunt for discount codes – the Latest Deals website has pages for Pizza Hut vouchers and delivery deals, for instance, and you can also check HotUKDeals.

Some offers can see you get up to 50% off your order – but this will depend on what deal is on at the time.

You should also check your emails for any promotions if you sign up to the newsletter, and ring up your local branch as well.

Download apps – there are often lots of freebies and codes hidden away on restaurant apps – like MyMcdonald’s, for example.

Sometimes there are 20% deals and delivery codes, and every Monday the app has a host of deals available to cash in on.

Student discount – sometimes there’s a 20% off deal on delivery if you’re a student – you just need to make sure your student card is on you.

Of course, the amount you get off will also depend on the time of year and who you’re ordering from.

Again, if you have the app, you might be able to check there.

Four shops giving advent calendar freebies and discounts – including M&S and Lidl

SHOPS and supermarkets are giving away free items and discounted products in the run up to Christmas.

It means you can pick up free nibbles and stocking fillers every day – which is the perfect excitement to add to the festive season.

Alamy

You could get free freebies this Christmas from several shop discount schemes[/caption]

Shoppers are rushing about the supermarket aisles already to prepare for a busy Christmas.

Whether you’re on the lookout for chocolate oranges, Quality Street tubs or advent calendars, you might like to know there’s a few discount schemes going about too.

From M&S to Lidl, we’ve listed a few for you below.

But just remember if something’s not free, you should only buy it if you were needing it in the first place – even discounted, you wouldn’t be saving any money otherwise.

Also keep in mind these are just Christmas Advent deals – they will not carry on past Christmas Eve at latest.

And make sure you continue to shop around if you’ve spotted a deal – you might find it cheaper elsewhere.

Websites like trolley.co.uk can be useful for food shopping while Latest Deals shares what discounts customers can get at a range of retailers.

Otherwise, here are the offers/freebie schemes that we found.

M&S

Marks and Spencers is hosting 12 Days of Sparks – which began yesterday (December 1) and lasts until December 12.

To get involved, you’ll need to create a Sparks account – which you can do for free via the app or M&S website.

You can download the app easily on the App Store – and it doesn’t take long to sign up.

When you log in each day, you’ll get a new reward. Simply tap the door which will appear on screen, and your reward will automatically be added to your account.

It’ll be different each day – yesterday, for example, shoppers received a free bag of Percy Pigs.

Ryman

You can take part in 12 Days of Christmas with Ryman by searching its website and popping in your email.

Again lasting until December 12, you can get access to daily discounts and exclusive freebies each day – but you need to use each prize the day of.

Yesterday’s prize, for example, was a free roll of 7m wrapping paper. You can pick your gift up in stores – and you can search your nearest branch using the store locator.

Each offer becomes invalid from 11:59pm the day you receive it – until the next offer comes in. So you’ll need to be quick if you win something.

Ryman specialise in stationary – so it might be good for you if you’re after office supplies for the new year.

Lidl

The Lidl Plus Advent Calendar is back this year – but this scheme lasts up until December 24.

You’ll need to download the Lidl Plus app for this – which is again free and easy to sign up to from the App Store.

Each day a box will appear on screen, which you tap to reveal the day’s coupon.

Each coupon will slash the price of a selected Lidl item – but you’d need to use them the day they’re received.

However, the coupon you receive on Christmas Eve will be valid up until December 27.

Do note you can only use each coupon once.

Morrisons

Morrisons have launched an in-app collective scheme this year, valid until December 12.

The idea is, if you shop at Morrisons for at least four weeks between when the scheme started (November 7) and December 12, you’ll get a money-off voucher which saves you £30 this Christmas.

There is a minimum spend of altogether £95 during those weeks, though.

Shoppers then have until January 3, 2023 to use the discount.

You’ll need to have My Morrisons app – which can be downloaded from the App Store for people with Apple iPhones or from the Google Play store for Android users -or on the website.

Other Christmas deals and discounts

Tesco has launched a massive 50% off toy sale lasting until December 28.

In the run up to Christmas, shoppers can get their hands on toys from Harry Potter kits to Paw Patrol dragons.

But do note you’ll need to have a Clubcard handy to grab most of these deals, but the sale is both online and in stores so keep an eye out at your local branch in case we missed other discounts.

There’s also a big Lidl toy sale on with prices starting from just £1.69.

The German discounter is selling everything from magnetic drawing boards to a Barbie Dream Camper this year.

If you look closely, you’ll also find a lot of Christmas treats and chocs on offer which can be a lot of fun for this month and the New Year.

For example, The Range shoppers found a scrumptious 840g Cadbury Chocolate House Kit, available in stores only.

You build the house yourself – like a gingerbread house – and it contains:

  • Two Cadbury Dairy Milk Winter Wonderland Edition bars (100g)
  • Two classic Cadbury Dairy Milk bars (180g)
  • Two bags of Cadbury White Buttons (14.4g)
  • Two smaller Cadbury Dairy Milk bars (110g)
  • One Cadbury Flake (32g)

We also spoke to a shopping expert who told us how to make £40 a month from buying Christmas presents and food.

Make sure you have some shopping apps downloaded, and always keep hold of your receipts.

Get Sky TV and Netflix for £22p/m in superb December deal

THE November sales madness might be over but we’ve just spotted an impressive Sky TV deal.

You can pick up the Signature package, which includes Sky TV and Netflix, for just £22 per month.

Sky’s Signature package incorporates both Sky TV and Netflix, saving you cash

In these financially rocky times, shoppers everywhere are looking for places to cut back on their outgoings and that includes television.

With the soaring cost of living, all those different streaming subscriptions start to look pretty excessive, right?

That’s why we wanted to flag this new deal on Sky Signature as it combines Sky’s core roster of channels with Standard Netflix – getting them together works out a lot cheaper.

The basic Sky TV channels include Sky Atlantic, Sky Max, Sky Comedy, Dave Ja Vu and the Food Network.

Anybody who wants to boost that content should take a look at some of the savings on bolt-on packages.

For instance, Sky Sports has been reduced from £32 to £20 per month, and Sky Cinema has dropped from £19 to just £9 per months.

These are pretty solid savings on what will be an 18-month contract.

Sky’s Signature TV package can be accessed via either the Sky Q satellite and box, or on the newer Sky Glass.

The Glass is Sky’s very own television, and it doesn’t need a dish to work. It’s a great option for anybody hunting for a new 4K TV as there’s no upfront cost.

Discover more top deals and savings at your favourite tech retailers by heading to Sun Vouchers. Sun Vouchers is the one-stop shop where you can find hundreds of discount codes for top chains including Currys, Argos, AliExpress and more.

ExpressVPN 12-month plan 49% cheaper in post-Cyber Monday deal

IF you are in the market for a premium VPN service but don’t want it to cost the earth then you’re in luck, we’ve found you a great deal that will save you a bundle.

You can save 49% on ExpressVPN for 12 months, one of the best deals we have seen on the market.

You can still save on a top-notch VPN service this December
  • ExpressVPN, 12 months + 3 Months FREE for £5.70 (save 49%) – buy here

Cyber Monday may have been and gone but there are still plenty of great VPN deals to be found, including this bargain on ExpressVPN.

You can get 12 months of ExpressVPN for just £5.70, better still you’ll get an extra 3 months completely free.

That will get you a total of 15 months of protection for you to stream, search and email all for under £6.

If you are asking yourself what is a VPN? In layman’s terms, it’s an extra layer of protection between you, would-be hackers, and data snoopers. So it’s definitely worth the small price to pay for long-term online safety.

You’ll also be covered by a money-back guarantee for the first 30 days, which comes with all plans offered by ExpressVPN giving you peace of mind if you decide it’s not for you.
