Bukayo Saka reveals support from Arsenal legends & Arsene Wenger regret

The England winger revealed the Arsenal support network he has from ‘legends’ and his one big Wenger regret.

Bukayo Saka has revealed the regular support he gets from Arsenal legends Thierry Henry and Robert Pires.

The 21-year-old, a product of Arsenal’s famed Hale End academy, has been one of England’s standout performers in his first-ever World Cup, scoring three goals in as many games for the Three Lions.

Likewise, Henry and Pires also starred in the World Cup during their respective careers, helping France lift the trophy in 1998 before teaming up to go an entire Premier League season unbeaten with the famous Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ in 2003/04.

“We have so many French players, like Thierry and Robert Pires, that have been around the club and spoken to me and helped me,” Saka said in a press conference on Monday.

“They still both support me to this day, so I’m grateful to them. Of course, on the pitch, they were magnificent, and they delivered silverware for Arsenal, so they’ll definitely be legends – always.”

Henry’s phone call & the Wenger regret

After Saka’s penalty miss in England’s Euro 2020 final defeat by Italy, Henry contacted the youngster to offer his support.

“It showed a lot of character from him to get my number and reach out to me,” Saka said of the former Gunners striker’s gesture. “After most Arsenal games, he reaches out to me. He’s still so passionate about the club; he’s an amazing person.”

However, while Saka is in regular contact with some of Arsenal’s finest players in history, the academy graduate is yet to meet the club’s legendary former manager Arsene Wenger.

“One of my biggest regrets – things I haven’t been able to do – was to meet Arsene Wenger,” Saka revealed. “I know how much everyone at the club loves him, and I know what he did for the club.”

Saka will hope to continue his fine World Cup form in England’s quarter-final tie against France on Saturday.

‘These are crap’ – Wayne Rooney’s hilarious verdict on Everton heroes when he broke into team at 16

WAYNE ROONEY has delivered a hilarious verdict on his Everton team-mates from when he broke into the team aged just 16.

The forward grew up a huge Toffees fan and swiftly rose through the ranks at Goodison Park.

He made his debut aged just 16 in 2002… and his perception of his heroes swiftly changed when he started seeing them up close.

Chatting to Toffee TV, he said: “It’s mad how quick it changed.

“For me to go in with Duncan (Ferguson), Stubbsy (Alan Stubbs)… all of them I’ve grown up watching…”

The host then added the name “Mark Pembridge”, with Rooney laughing before adding: “To then go and play with them, train with them every day, play with them…

“And then so quickly I remember thinking ‘these are crap’.”

Everton came seventh in Rooney’s first season, the future England captain scoring six times as he adapted to regular Premier League football at such a young age.

The following campaign was a more challenging one, with the Toffees only narrowly avoiding relegation by coming 17th.

Rooney, now 37, managed nine goals and four assists that term – and would leave for Manchester United the following summer.

After 13 glittering years, during which he became the Red Devils’ all-time leading goalscorer – Wazza returned to his beloved Goodison Park in 2017.

He scored 10 times in 31 Prem outings before leaving Everton for a second time – finishing off his career with spells at DC United and Derby County.

Rooney went on to manage the Rams, before leaving last summer and subsequently taking up the head coach position at DC United.

Arsenal interested in shock Yunus Musah transfer return as Mikel Arteta sends scouts to watch USA World Cup star

ARSENAL are interested in re-signing USA’s World Cup star Yunus Musah and sent scouts out to Qatar to watch him, according to reports.

The 20-year-old American was allowed to leave the Gunners back in 2019 after seven years at the Hale End academy.

Yunus Musah impressed for USA at the World Cup[/caption]

He departed North London to join Valencia where he has begun to impress for the LaLiga outfit.

Central midfielder Musah has scored five goals and provided three assists in 81 appearances for Gennaro Gattuso’s side, but it is at the World Cup where he has caught the eye once more.

He was one of USA‘s best-performing players in Qatar as they drew with Wales and England and beat Iran to reach the last-16.

They were eventually eliminated by Holland in the second round, losing 3-1 to Louis van Gaal’s men.

But Musah’s displays have not gone unnoticed as Fabrizio Romano claims Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta sent scouts out to the Middle East to watch their former player – with Inter Milan also keeping tabs on him.

The transfer expert told CBS: “Yunus Musah is also in the list of Premier League clubs.

“Arsenal recently sent their scouts to monitor him, but there are also other Premier League giants well informed on the Valencia midfielder.

“Inter Milan are interested too, but the price tag could be too high for them in January.

“Of course, Musah could leave Valencia between January and June.”

Born in New York, Musah played for England at every age group level up to U18.

He then declared for USA in 2020 – where he has already received 23 caps.

Watch Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu’s stunned reaction as he’s told team-mate Gabriel Jesus got injured for Brazil

TAKEHIRO TOMIYASU looked open-mouthed with surprise and sympathy when he learned Arsenal pal Gabriel Jesus’ World Cup was over.

The Japan right-back reacted touchingly with a string of questions as he was told Brazil striker Jesus had suffered a serious knee injury.

Takehiro Tomiyasu was upset for Jesus but then gutted as Japan exited the World Cup on penalties against Croatia on Monday

Tomiyasu was preparing for Monday’s last-16 clash with Croatia, where he played the whole 120 minutes of a 1-1 draw before Japan exited 3-1 on penalties.

He was unaware Jesus could need surgery and sit out three months – rocking their club’s chances of retaining their lead in the Premier League.

When asked about the former Manchester City frontman. Tomiyasu replied: “I don’t know – he has got injured? Jesus? Oh, I didn’t know that.

“Really? Because I watched only the first half – and then he was injured in the second half?

“It’s bad. Where is this? Knees? Oh, it’s a shame because obviously to play in the World Cup is a big dream for us, for every football player.

“So I’m sorry for him but hopefully he will be back soon.”

Jesus sustained his nasty knock in last Friday’s 1-0 group loss to Cameroon.

But Brazil certainly didn’t miss him as they swept aside South Korea with a 4-1 blitz in the last 16 on Monday.

That included strikes from fellow forwards Vinicius Junior, Neymar with a penalty and Richarlison.

In contrast, Jesus’ absence might tempt Gunners‘ boss Mikel Arteta to widen his wishlist in the January transfer window.

So far Arteta has reportedly targeted a new midfield anchorman and a winger.

The Spaniard has also been linked with battling Tottenham for Ecuador’s Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

Man Utd transfer news: Bookies reveal FULL LIST of most likely forward signings in January to replace Cristiano Ronaldo

MANCHESTER UNITED are actively pursuing a new striker in January following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

And there are several high-profile targets who could join Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford during the winter, according to bookmakers Betfair.

Cody Gakpo is Manchester United’s most likely January addition, according to Betfair

Ronaldo, 37, left United shortly after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

His departure was “mutually agreed” but leaves the club short on genuine striking options with 24 matches of the campaign remaining.

Reports suggest Ten Hag will look to remedy that situation in January, and Betfair think there’s one stand-out option in Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo, 23, has shone for the Netherlands at the World Cup.

He’s scored three of Holland’s eight goals, adding to the 13 he’s already registered for PSV Eindhoven in the 2022-23 season.

SunSport understand United chiefs are ready to make an approach, and could be prepared to meet PSV’s £50million valuation.

Gakpo, though, has insisted his full focus is on helping the Netherlands to World Cup success.

Man Utd transfer odds – forward

Betfair odds

  • Cody Gakpo – 7/4
  • Matheus Cunha – 12/1
  • Ivan Toney – 14/1
  • Mohamed Kudus – 16/1
  • Kylian Mbappe – 50/1

He said: “I’m not thinking about that now. I’m just really focused on the tournament, trying to keep performing well and helping the team and hopefully when we become world champion then I can think about that.”

Behind the 7/4 favourite Gakpo is Atletico Madrid’s Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha at 12/1.

However, Cadena Ser claim Wolves are close to winning that battle with Cunha possibly being the first signing of the Julen Lopetegui era.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney is next at 14/1 ahead of 16/1 shot Mohamed Kudus, who’s also earned plaudits for his performances in Qatar.

The final name in the frame is Paris Saint-Germain and France superstar Kylian Mbappe (50/1), who is reportedly eyeing a Parc des Princes departure.

Arsenal head to Dubai for warm-weather training ahead of Prem season return as Elneny fights back to fitness

MOHAMED ELNENY is targeting a Christmas return as a powerful Arsenal squad step up their warm-weather training in Dubai.

The Egypt midfielder made two Premier League appearances as a sub for the leaders in November after three months out with a hamstring injury.

Mo Elneny twice came on as sub in November and started clashes in the EFL Cup and Europa League on his return from injury

Reiss Nelson might hope for more Prem games following Gabriel Jesus’ injury[/caption]

Arsenal are going through the gears in training before restarting the Prem at Christmas five points clear of second-placed Manchester City[/caption]

And he’s one of 14 first-teamers amongst the 27 players that boss Mikel Arteta has picked for the Dubai Cup over the next week.

The Gunners face Lyon on December 8 and AC Milan five days later.

The current World Cup break came perfectly for three stars plagued by fitness issues this season.

Elneny, fellow midfielder Emile Smith Rowe and left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko will expect to be back in top shape when Arsenal resume their Prem title bid at home to West Ham on December 26.

Zinchenko has been troubled by a calf injury and Smith Rowe’s hopes of adding to his three England caps with a call-up for Qatar were ended by groin surgery two months ago.

But once the World Cup finishes, Arteta still faces being without crocked Brazil frontman Gabriel Jesus until as late as February.

That could persuade the Spaniard into a bigger new-year transfer spree than he had planned.

A midfield anchorman and winger reportedly topped his wishlist.

But Jesus’ absence would leave Arteta with little striking back-up except for Eddie Nketiah.

Arsenal are also being linked with Ecuador’s star World Cup defender Piero Hincapie.

Tottenham too are said to be keen on the Bayer Leverkusen ace, 20.

The Red Devils have jetted off to Cadiz in Spain for a warm-weather training camp before the Premier League returns this month.

The majority of United’s first team are in Qatar for the World Cup, forcing Ten Hag to call up numerous youngsters.

But the Dutchman appeared thrilled just to be back in the groove as he kept a watchful eye on his talented team today.

The likes of Alejandro Garnacho, David De Gea and Victor Lindelof were all in action in mild 17C temperatures.

They were joined by other first-team regulars including Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek.

And United have also been given a further boost with injured trio Tom Heaton, Brandon Williams and Axel Tuanzebe also getting minutes on the training field.

The Red Devils are now bracing themselves for testing friendlies against Cadiz and Real Betis this week.

And youngsters including Shola Shoretire, Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal will all be hoping for a chance to impress Ten Hag.

United return to action in the Carabao Cup against Burnley on December 21, with their first taste of Prem action coming six days later against Nottingham Forest.

Many fans see it as the start of a bright new era following Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit.

And Ten Hag is sure to be drawing up plans for a potential new forward signing in January, with Holland and PSV star Cody Gakpo reportedly top of his list.

However, United could face a battle against Arsenal after they lost striker Gabriel Jesus to injury for three months.

Everton, Southampton and West Ham are also monitoring Gakpo.

Arsenal reveal new iconic retro range in hilarious launch video starring Ray Parlour as fashion designer

ARSENAL have launched a new retro clothing range under the direction of former star Ray Parlour.

The Gunners often bring out unique clothing items for fans to buy, such as their London Underground inspired Adidas range that was put on sale in January.

Arsenal’s iconic 2001-02 home shirt has been reimagined
A pop-up store was opened to help launch the retro collection
Oleksandr Zinchenko models a windbreaker
Ray Parlour was the creative director for the new range

Now the club has introduced retro fits to their online shop – all featuring Arsenal‘s iconic old badge that was scrapped in 2002.

All of the clothes are a throwback including the famous gold away kit from the 2001-02 campaign.

The home shirt from that shirt has been recreated – which is perhaps no surprise considering Parlour scored in the FA Cup final that year to help Arsenal to the double.

Parlour is the creative director behind the launch and opened up ‘Ray’s Fashion Parlour’ in Soho over the weekend.

Items ranging from windbreakers, hoodies, tees and trackpants to varsity jackets went on sale at the pop-up store.

The new products are also available on the Arsenal Direct interactive online shop and Parlour revealed he was very pleased to pay homage to a golden period in Arsenal’s history.

He said: “The noughties were a fantastic decade for Arsenal, so it’s great to be part of the collection that pays homage to one of our golden periods.

“I’m buzzing to open the doors of Ray’s Fashion Parlour to our supporters and give them a chance to get their hands on our new collection!”

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard modelled the new collection alongside defenders William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Eddie Nketiah also posed in the new gear, while Parlous channelled his inner Steve Jobs in a black turtle neck.

Man Utd ‘line up Yann Sommer free transfer with Switzerland goalkeeper tipped to REPLACE David de Gea’

MANCHESTER UNITED are lining-up a free transfer for Yann Sommer, according to reports.

The Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper is in the final year of his deal and is able to move for free in the summer.

Yann Sommer is out of contract at the end of the season

He’s also able to sign a pre-contract from January.

BILD report the Red Devils are pursuing him and he could be lined-up to replace long-serving keeper David De Gea as no.1.

The Spanish stopper has been at Old Trafford for over a decade and has experienced patchy form during periods of his long stay.

He has also failed to impress Spain manager Luis Enrique who not only left him out of the World Cup squad but did not even include de Gea in the preliminary 55-man set up.

In contrast Sommer started Switzerland’s first two games before missing their last match with illness.

The 33-year-old has been at Mönchengladbach since 2014 and impressed with his performances.

He previously spent seven years in the first-team of FC Basel.

Reports have suggested Man United have been trying to find a de Gea replacement for months.

The club have been linked with a move for Porto keeper Diogo Costa.

Scouts are reported to be watching him closely.

The 23-year-old is comfortable in possession and would help Erik ten Hag produce his preferred style of play of passing it out from the back.
