Huge racing whip rule change to come into force one month before Cheltenham Festival

HUGE new whip rules will be introduced just over a month before the Cheltenham Festival.

From February 6, jumps jockeys will only be allowed to use the padded whip in the backhand position.

PA:Press Association

Strict new whip rules will come into force in February next year[/caption]

The limit on number of times a jockey can use the whip remains at eight per race.

But serious breaches of the rules could now lead to disqualification – though the BHA have confirmed this will not affect punters for betting purposes.

There will be a four-week bedding-in period, starting on January 9, when jockeys will not be punished if they break the new rules.

But from February 6 onwards they will face harsher penalties if they break the rules, especially in big races – so they will be under the microscope during the Cheltenham Festival which starts on March 14.

The Festival is the most important and competitive meeting of the entire year, and jockeys will be under pressure to restrain themselves in a tight finish if they don’t want to risk losing the race altogether.

Under the new rules, for example, Native River would likely have been stripped of his Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2018 after Richard Johnson went over the whip limit, leading to a seven-day ban and £6,500 fine.

Brant Dunshea, chief regulatory officer for the BHA, said: “We are extremely grateful for the engagement and feedback we have received through the period of technical discussions.

“The discussions were full and frank, hence the time they have taken to conclude.

“The discussions quickly established that there was overall support for the vast majority of the recommendations.

“However, as expected there were some areas of concern raised. We have listened to the feedback we received and made adjustments to the initial proposals accordingly.

“We recognise that some of the new rules are going to take some time to get used to for some jockeys, which is why we have factored in time for communication and education as well as a bedding-in period before the rules and penalties are implemented in full.”

The same rules will come into affect on the Flat on March 27 following the same four-week bedding-in period, which starts in later February.

World Cup: France vs Australia – Betting analysis

Ace Football previews the World Cup round 1 match between France and Australia and offers team stats, betting tips and the latest odds.

France and Australia open up their respective World Cup campaigns against each other this coming Tuesday. The game is staged at Al Janoub Stadium.

This is the opening match of the group stage for France and Australia with both aiming to secure a good start to the tournament standings. Everyone knows this could be pivotal for a strong tournament. France bid welcome to Australia as number 4 in the FIFA world ranking, while the latter rank as number 38.

France are heavy favourites with the bookmakers to top their group. France have enough quality in their ranks to also reach for a final at the World Cup. Australia arrive at the World Cup with mischief on their mind, but seeing them get beyond the group would indeed raise some eyebrows.

Position in the World Cup standings: France vs Australia

Bookmakers firmly expect France to book their first win of the World Cup at the first time of asking. They’ll be eager to send a message to upcoming opponents of how strong they are. Australia could be on a hiding to nothing, when setting off their World Cup campaign as hefty outsider at Al Janoub Stadium. It has the look of trying to minimize defeat at Al Janoub Stadium on 22nd November at 20:00.

Team form: France vs Australia

I brushed off my baby girl’s wet nappy as nothing – I had no idea it was a sign of a silent killer

WHEN little Layla Henschen kept chugging cups of water and was going through more nappies than usual, her mum first brushed it off as being down to the weather.

It was May 2022, and mum Ashley Henschen said the temperatures had started to increase.

Ashley Henschen

Little Layla Henschen was drinking and urinating more often and had become irritable[/caption]

Initially, she though that her two-year-old was just adjusting to the heat.

However, she became concerned when her toddler was soaking through her nappies.

After two weeks of her daughter suffering, Ashley, who lives in the US, took her little girl to the doctors, who diagnosed her with type 1 diabetes.

The condition causes the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood to become too high, the NHS states.

Major diabetes breakthrough as new drug that delays condition gets green light

RISK FACTOR

Living near street lights ‘increases your risk of silent killer’, experts warn

Symptoms often include, feeling very thirsty and peeing more than usual.

It’s often referred to as a silent killer because in many cases, people don’t know they have the illness – as it can take a long time for symptoms to appear.

The condition, if left untreated, can lead to a risk of strokes, heart disease, blindness, kidney disease and amputation, Diabetes UK states.

Along with being thirsty and peeing more often, Ashley said little Layla had also been irritable, something she put down to the ‘terrible twos’.

“We kind of brushed it off. She’s growing. It seemed like every sign and symptom could easily be brushed off as something else.”

“She was pretty irritable. It was hard to go to a restaurant at that time.

“We had gone on a trip, and she was just really terrible the whole time. They warn you about going out with your 2-year-old to a restaurant and stuff. So, she had all the signs, but because we didn’t know what to look for, (we missed it),” she told Today.

The family went through two weeks of this before a nurse told Ashley to take her little girl to the GP as soon as possible, after she had relayed her symptoms to her.

She was given a urine tests and medics noticed that she had elevated blood glucose levels – she was then diagnosed with diabetes.

The symptoms of type 1 diabetes you need to know

GUIDANCE from the NHS states if you or your child have any of the below symptoms, then you should see your GP.

  • feeling very thirsty
  • peeing more than usual, particularly at night
  • feeling very tired
  • losing weight without trying
  • thrush that keeps coming back
  • blurred vision
  • cuts and grazes that are not healing
  • fruity-smelling breath

The experts added that when it comes to children, the symptoms of the illness come on fast.

In order to detect where you have the condition, your GP will do a urine test and will also check your blood glucose levels.

“It was never a thought in my mind, I was so confused,” Ashley added.

The little girl was rushed to hospital where medics ran more tests.

They found she was experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis, which happens when a person doesn’t have enough insulin in their system to convert sugar into energy.

After her diagnosis, Layla stayed in the hospital for two days and while she was there, her parents learned about the illness and how they will have to care for her.

Ashley said it had been really hard for her to accept, but said that as soon as treatment started, they immediately noticed a change in Layla’s mood.

Now, her little girl is far happier and Ashley said she is getting used to wearing the glucose monitor on her arm.

I got a parcel in the post from my grandma who’s been dead for two years… then I found out the heartwarming reason why

HER grandmother passed away two years ago.

So imagine Jen Hamilton’s surprise when she received a package in the mail – from her late relative.

Jen Hamilton was left more than a little confused when she received a parcel in the post from her grandmother, who has been dead for two years[/caption]

The package contained a picture of Jen’s grandmother and grandfather, who is also deceased

As well as a money order for $250, but no note explaining the contents

Jen took to TikTok to document herself opening the parcel, inside which was a photograph of her grandmother and grandfather, who is also dead, and a money order for $250.

But there was “no letter, no context, no nothing”, so Jen had no idea where it came from.

In addition, the money order was dated the 14th November and the parcel was sent on the 16th November.

It also had her “grandmother’s stationery sticker, with the address where she lived when she was alive” on it.

IN THE MONEY

I found rare coin in my gran’s garden – now I’m selling it for a huge sum

“My mum had no clue what was going on, but she did recognise the handwriting on the package,” Jen said in another video on her TikTok page.

“And my sister got an identical package with the exact same things inside, also missing context.

“I was at work and got a message from my twin cousin Heather. And Heather said, ‘I was just as confused as you because I got the exact same package.’

“One of my aunts and uncles – my mum has many, many siblings – had sold my grandmother’s vehicle.

“And we didn’t know – we weren’t expecting any proceeds from that at all.

“But they split it 18 different ways.”

Jen concluded: “During this holiday season, I am excited to use that money in the way that Grandma would have wanted me to.”

“Your aunt and uncle doing that speaks VOLUMES!” one person commented on the video.

“That’s a rare thing for families to not be selfish after a loved ones’ passing.

I’m terrified I’ve ruined Christmas for my three-year-old daughter after making a present mistake – it’s devastating

IT can be difficult to try and hide Christmas presents from children ahead of the big day.

At least, that’s what one mum found out, when the gift her daughter was desperate for was delivered early – and her little girl saw it.

One mum was left terrified she’s “ruined Christmas” for her three-year-old daughter
TikTok/@didyousaytarget
She was left stunned when she arrived home with her daughter to find this giant box on their driveway
TikTok/@didyousaytarget

The mum took to TikTok to share her story, as she began: “I’ve ruined Christmas so there’s that.

“I have a three year old and all she wanted for Christmas is this Barbie camper Jeep extravaganza of a gift.

“So I search high and low for it and I can’t find it anywhere. I finally find it at Walmart.”

She then bought the camper set, and arranged to have it delivered, without “really thinking” about it.

SCENT-SATIONAL

I love the Christmas Yankee Candle but it’s £27, so I found a £3.99 dupe

“And yesterday, as we were driving home from school and pull into the driveway, there it is – right in the middle of the driveway,” she said.

While she instantly tried to think about how to prevent her daughter from seeing the massive box, it was impossible to do so.

“The second we turned the corner, her Spidey senses  say, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s my Jeep camper’,” she said.

“She sees it. So I’m frantic, thinking, ‘What do I do?’”

She then came up with the idea to pretend Santa had sent a letter, after grabbing a piece of blank paper from her car.

“I pull out this piece of paper that has no writing on it and it says, ‘Dear child, who’s been so good, I couldn’t fit this on my sleigh so I had to deliver it early.

“‘However, it’s not going to work until Christmas so we’re going to have to save it and you can use it at Christmas.

“‘Happy early Merry Christmas.’”

But there were several issues with her plan.

Firstly, “she’s three and she wants to play with it now”.

And secondly, she explained: ” I have now sent my child to school to tell every other child that she already got a gift from Santa, and ruined it for every other parent.

“I’m sorry.”

She added in the caption: “My heart is broken at the fact that the magic of the gift that we were going to give our daughter is gone because of the delivery in the middle of the driveway.

“Christmas is supposed to be this magical moment where they experience the magic and I feel like it’s gone now.

“This gift wasn’t cheap either so of course I had to be the gift that we really wanted to surprise her with now that surprise is gone.

“I hope she doesn’t remember this Christmas and it’s ruined for the future of the magic that I was hoping to experience with my daughter.”

She also asked for any “tips or tricks” for hiding Christmas presents, as well as slamming Walmart for not putting the toy in a different box.

Top baby names of 2022 revealed…and there’s a new girls’ ones taking the lead

FROM sifting through baby books to social forum sites, there are a whole host of different places parents look to for baby name inspiration.

And according to new findings from BabyCentre, the top 100 baby boys’ and girls’ monikers of 2022 have been inspired from sources as diverse as reality TV show Love Island and the 90s revival.

BabyCentre has unveiled its list of the top 100 baby boys’ and girls’ names of 2022, as well as the biggest trends influencing parents. Pictured, stock image[/caption]

Tens of thousands of parents have registered their baby name choices on the site over the year and experts at the leading pregnancy and parenting resource analysed the data to discover the biggest trends influencing parents.

Among the places parents are seeking inspiration include reality TV show Love Island.

The 2022 runner up Luca (Bish) was one of the highest climbers this year, leaping 21 places into the top ten.

Following closely 2021’s Toby (Aromolaran) rose 20 places while his fellow runner up Chloe (Burrows) also went up a place.

Other contestants who flew up include 2021 winners Millie (Court) and Liam (Reardon), Teddy (Soares), Dr Alex (George) and Zara (Mcdermott).

Maura (Higgins) and Ovie (Soko) saw a number of registrations for the very first time this year.

Sarah Redshaw, UK Managing Editor for BabyCentre, said: “Love Islander names are definitely parents’ type on paper. And BabyCentre parents haven’t been putting all their eggs in the 2022 Love Island basket either.

It’s possible that the islanders’ continued fame on social media and more reality TV is causing this surge.”

The findings also showed a 90s revival, with parents naming their little ones after the decade’s icons, as well as resurrecting the most popular names from back in the day too.

The monikers which saw a resurgence include Thomas, Jack, Daniel, Matthew, Samuel, Charlotte and Emily.

90s music had an influence too with Liam rocking up 10 places in the charts although brother, rival and former Oasis bandmate Noel went down in registrations.

Fans of classic 90s comedy Friends sent Matthew (Perry/LeBlanc), David (Schwimmer) and Lisa (Kudrow) soaring in popularity.

The research also found that England’s UEFA victory brought football names home, with the monikers of the women’s football squad surging in popularity.

Leah (Williamson), Millie (Bright) and winning goal scorer Chloe (Kelly) all climbed the top 100 while Lauren (Hemp) saw a rise in registrations.

Football fever meant the presenters and pundits who were there through the lionesses’ journey to victory also scored with parents. Gabby (Logan), Alexandra (Alex Scott), Susan (Sue Smith) and Isobel (Izzy Christiansen) have all surged in popularity.

Sarah commented: “After their incredible 2-1 win over Germany at Wembley Stadium in July, parents seem to have been inspired not only by the England women’s but the team of presenters too.

“As the lionesses ended years of hurt for footy fans, parents made sure their names came home. It’s now over to the men to make the same kind of impact – no pressure!”

UFC legend Jon Jones on course for huge heavyweight debut in March against Ngannou after dramatic body transformation

JON JONES’ long-awaited return to the octagon is in the works for March.

The former long-reigning light-heavyweight champion hasn’t set foot inside the cage in almost THREE YEARS due to a very public dispute with the UFC brass.

Jon Jones has undergone a dramatic body transformation ahead of his move up to heavyweight[/caption]

Jones has used his time on the sidelines to bulk up in preparation for his long-awaited move up to heavyweight, which is being targeted for UFC 285.

MMA Junkie reported on Monday night that the UFC are hoping to have Jones challenge Francis Ngannou for the 265lb title on March 4.

SunSport have since confirmed Jones is indeed tentatively slated to return to the octagon on the third pay-per-view of 2023.

A fight against Ngannou, however, is by no means guaranteed as the heavyweight king is currently recovering from major knee surgery.

Should Ngannou not be ready for March, the UFC will pivot to perennial contender Curtis Blaydes.

The UFC had hoped to pit Jones against former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in the final pay-per-view of the year.

But they failed to reach an agreement with the Cleveland clubber, who is seemingly content with his firefighting duties.

Jones’ hiatus from the octagon has in part been down to a very public pay row with the UFC brass.

But SunSport revealed in January that his advisor, Richard Schaefer had resumed negotiations with the promotion and hashed out a new lucrative deal for Bones.

He said: “He is willing, ready and able to fight whoever we can get for the heavyweight title.”

Jones last ventured to the octagon in the main event of UFC 247 for what proved to be his final defence of the light-heavyweight title.

The former pound-for-pound king retained the 205lbs strap with a controversial unanimous decision, although many thought Reyes did enough to hand him his first legitimate loss.

And Jones is champing at the bit to erase the memory of that performance and become a two-division champion.

What year did Holly Willoughby present I’m A Celebrity?

ANT And Dec have hosted I’m A Celebrity since it first burst onto our screens in 2002.

However, during the show’s history there was one year where the ITV series was presented by Declan Donnelly and Holly Willoughby instead.

When did Holly Willoughby present I’m A Celebrity?

Holly Willoughby stepped into co-host I’m A Celebrity with Dec in 2018.

It came after Ant McPartlin took time off from the show due to personal reasons following his conviction for drink driving.

This Morning host Holly was ITV bosses first choice to take on the role and they used a big cash offer to tempt her in.

A TV source told The Sun back in 2018: “Holly was the first choice to stand in for Ant on the show and the six figure offer reflected how much they wanted to get her on board.

RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE

Here’s who has left I’m A Celebrity so far

“She’s so popular and she’s got a great relationship with Dec, it was a no brainer.

“Holly’s worth her weight in gold and the fee reflects that.”

Meanwhile, Holly said in a statement at the time: “I couldn’t be more excited to have been asked to stand alongside Dec for the next jungle adventure.

“I love Ant and want to send him my best wishes and support for a continued recovery. These are big shoes, not to fill, but just to keep warm for a little bit…

“Honestly, I’m a huge fan of I’m A Celebrity and actually feel like I’ve won a competition to go and hang out on my favourite show!

“When is it a good time to tell Dec I’m scared of everything that moves?!”

While ITV said: “Holly will join Dec for the 18th series of this much loved family show, as Ant McPartlin takes a break from TV presenting.”

ITV’s Director of Television, Kevin Lygo added: “Holly is a brilliant presenter with a wicked sense of humour who has always enjoyed a great friendship and rapport with Ant and Dec – I have no doubt she will take to Jungle life, if not the critters, really quickly.”

Who presented This Morning while Holly was in Australia?

When she took on the I’m A Celebrity presenting gig, Holly was away from This Morning from October 18, 2018 until January 7, 2019.
